If you have sleep apnea, you may already practice various habits to help you enjoy better rest. Whether it’s going to bed earlier, exercising, or using a sleep apnea treatment from your dentist, you’re probably doing all you can to minimize your symptoms. However, did you know that your diet can both negatively and positively impact your sleep apnea? Read to learn about some foods you should avoid for better sleep as well as an alternative diet to help you count sheep!

Foods That Make Your Sleep Apnea Worse

Part of managing your sleep apnea in Columbus is watching what you eat. To give yourself the best chance at a good night’s sleep, avoid these foods:

Bananas

While most fruits are actually good for your sleep apnea, bananas can cause issues. They increase mucus production, which makes it more difficult to breathe during sleep, exacerbating your symptoms. Keep in mind that the more soft or overly ripe bananas are, the more they may negatively impact your sleep.

High-Fat Dairy

Obesity is one of the main risk factors of sleep apnea, which is why you should do your best to avoid fatty foods, especially high-fat dairy products. Butter, heavy cream, whole milk, and cheese are just some examples of dairy products with higher fat content.

Refined Carbs

Foods like bread, pizza, pastries, and more contain high amounts of sugar, which can worsen your sleep apnea symptoms and increase your risk of obesity.  These foods are already on your dentist’s “bad list,” so you should do your best to avoid them whenever possible.

Caffeinated Beverages

You probably enjoy a morning pick me up in the form of your favorite coffee. After all, you need that boost to get going! However, drinking caffeine throughout the day will make it harder to fall asleep at night. That’s why you should try to only consume caffeine in the morning.

Try This Delicious Diet Instead

While some foods can make your sleep worse, these items can help you catch the Zzz’s you need:

  • Fruits and veggies: Also great foods for your teeth, fruits and veggies contain fiber, which keeps you feeling full for longer, decreasing the amount you eat. This brings your risk of obesity down and your sleep time up.
  • Plant-based oils: Another way to avoid fatty foods and sugars is to try cooking with plant-based oils like margarine, olive oil, and flaxseeds.
  • Whole grains: These products keep you full like fruits and veggies and help you avoid extra sugar. You can find whole grain bread, cereal, rice, and more!

Are you ready to enjoy a restful night of sleep? Remember this diet to manage your sleep apnea symptoms in the best way possible!
